Why am i like this?

In life we must ask questions. life itself is full of questions which what we do and say on daily basis are means of providing answers to them. Question is defined by dictionary as: A sentence, phrase or word which asks for information, reply or response; an interrogative. It is synonyms with inquiry, enquiry, query, subject, topic, problem, issue, consideration, interrogation. Many individuals in the Bible asked questions of which some were valid and some were not too smart. All were recorded for our learning Rom 15: 4. One of such questions was from a woman called Rebecca

Gen 25:22 KJV And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.

The account is about Rebecca, she experienced delay in having children for about twenty years and when she eventually took in or become pregnant, the Bible says the children were struggling in her womb. Rebecca was baffled and confused, she wanted to know what was happening. She wanted to know the root cause of the struggling in her womb and also to know is this the way things are with pregnant women? The happenings were strange and unusual. She asked a valid question “why am i thus” This is an old English way of asking why is this thing happening to me?
The simple meaning of which is probably this; if I must suffer such things, why did I ever wish to have a child? A speech not uncommon to mothers in their first pregnancy.
I love the way some Bible versions expressed it:

BBE And the children were fighting together inside her, and she said, If it is to be so, why am I like this? So she went to put her question to the Lord.
ISV But when the infants kept on wrestling each other inside her womb, she asked herself, “Why is this happening?” So she asked the LORD for an explanation.

There are many things that we need to question about ourselves, our status, nature, circumstances and positions. This is not to be misconstrue with being discontent with our lots in life, or trying to compare ourselves with other people. Questioning ourselves is not based on the premise that others are doing well and we are not. It is not based on comparison with another fellow human. Paul says something about people who does that kind of a thing:

2Cor 10:12 KJV For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

He said they are not wise. So it is not wise to compare ourselves with other people. The only thing you will get from such activity is either you become or develop superiority complex or inferiority complex which is not good for any one psychologically.

However, we need to make comparison. how and and in what way you may want to ask? We need to compare ourselves with the standard laid down in the Bible which is the final authority. There are certain things that the Bible has said must be done or should be happening to us. There are situations and circumstances we ought to be at all time. There are also circumstances in which we must not found ourselves r stay in it for more than necessary. There are places or height we ought to attain.

All these this are based on what the Lord Jesus has achieved for us through atonement and redemption that comes from His death, burial, resurrection, ascension and the sitting down at the right hand of God.
His passion brought so much for mankind. By His stripes we are already healed, 2Pet 2: 24, His grace delivered us from poverty and lack 2Cor 8: 9. He delivered us and God has translated us into Jesus’s marvelous light Col 1: 12-13. We are no longer under the jurisdiction of the devil, he lost his right and dominion over us.
Another great fact is that we also have a personal standard in the person of the Lord himself who is the glory of God.

Rom 3:23 KJV For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

To come short is to fall below the glory of God which is the Lord Jesus Himself. He is the standard rule of measurement. When we become born again, we become like Him in our spirit 1Jn 4: 17, this is because our spirit is now created in righteousness and true holiness Ephe 4: 24. All these makes us to be joined with the Lord 1Cor 6: 17. he that is joined with the Lord has become one spirit with Him. We are like Jesus molecule for molecule, atom for atom if there is anything like that.

But if our outward experience does not reflect who we are in the spirit, then we have a job to do. This is an area for comparison. Take for instance if we are down with flu or fever, others around us may be suffering the same, but the question is, Is Jesus taken with flu or fever? If not then we need to ask Rebecca question; “why am i like thus?” Why am i sick? Jesus is not sick, he was not even sick when He was on the earth and now in heaven there is no sickness there so why am i like this?

We need to ask ourselves why are we experiencing failure in life, marriage, business, career? We need to ask ourselves why am still single at this age? By now i am supposed to have married and have my family. So why am i like this? by all now i should be driving my own car so why am still like this? By now i should be living in my own house so why am still this way and staying in another man’s house for this long? With all my attendance in Bible studies i should have grown in the scripture and spiritual maturity and yet i am like this? The Bible says when you ought to be teachers you still need someone to teach you the elements of the beginning of the oracle of God. This applied to me. Why am i still behaving like a babe who still need milk of the word and not solid meat Heb 5: 14. Why am so fearful, fretful and so disappointed with life when i am supposed to put my hope in God and be an encourager to others, why am i like this? Why is this kind thing happening to me?

How do we correct this?
We need to go back to the standard of living which is the word of God. Jesus is the physical representation of the word of God. He is the word manifested in the flesh. So, Jesus and the word is the same and they are our reference and standard measurement of comparison.

2Cor 3:18 KJV But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

When we find out that the position and condition we found ourselves, the kind of life we are living, the place where we find ourselves, the kind of attitude and behaviour we exhibit are all contrary and not consistent with what we see in the Bible then we need to ask Rebecca type of question. But after asking the question, Rebecca went to enquire from the Lord for explanation. The good news is tha under the New Covenant we have explanation right with us and all are in the Bible.

What are the things we must to do?

We need to fight the good fight of faith. The good fight of faith is to compel our rebellious situations dn circumstances to line up with the word of God which is the standard and manual for living. 1Tim 6:12
We need to enforce the victory won for us by the Lord Jesus over the devils troubling us, 1JN 4: 4
We need to frame our worlds if it has been distorted Heb 11: 2-3
We need to work out our salvation and effect our salvation Phil 2: 12-13
We need to hinder the the devil from further hindering us Ephe 6:12
We need to proclaim what the Lord has said about us not what we saw about ourselves, Rom 10: 9-10.
We need to resist the devil vehemently James 4:7
We need to speak to the mountain Mk 11: 23-24
We need to act what we believe James 2:20
We need to fix our eyes on the standard. 2Co 3:18 KJV But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

The Greek word for change there is “metamorphoo” and it means to be transformed. As we look at the perfect law of liberty which is the word of God, we will see the image of God which is Jesus. He is the express image of His person Heb 1: 3. The bible says we will be transformed into that same image that we see. The reason is that we will see ourselves in the light of the word of God and as we take practical action to renew our mind as Rom 12: 2-3 says, we will be changed. Our thinking process will change and as Proverb says that as a man thinks in his heart so is he Prov 23: 7, we will become what we think about. Our thoughts will be influenced by the word now, we will think God’s kind of thought and so we will become what we think.
Our words will eventually changed from “why am i like this” into “see what the Lord has done” Praise God
